Supermercados del Sur was created by Southern Cross through the acquisition and merger of nine supermarket chains in Southern Chile to create the fourth-largest supermarket chain in the country and the leader in each of the four regions in which the company operates. In September 2011, Supermercados del Sur was merged with SMU creating the third-largest supermarket chain in Chile.
